The Victorian Department of Education is currently reviewing the school canteen policy and we have a crucial window to advocate for a policy that protects children’s health.
That is why we have come together to call for mandatory healthy food policies in all Victorian schools.
We are inviting like-minded organisations to join us.Add your organisation’s logo using the form below to show your support and help us call for a school food environment that puts children’s wellbeing first.
Why this matters
Right now, Victorian children are being let down by unhealthy food environments in schools.
continue to sell ‘never and ‘occasionally’ classified foods
Almost 40%
of the energy intake of Victorian children comes from discretionary foods like sugary drinks, processed snacks, and confectionery
Only 1 in 25 children
eat enough vegetables each day
Children consume one-third of their energy intake at school
making canteen food critically important
Evidence shows that improving the school food environment can boost healthy eating habits, improve classroom focus and learning outcomes, and help reduce health inequities among students, supporting a fairer and healthier future for all.
Stronger Policy Works
Other states have shown the way. In New South Wales and in Western Australia, where healthy canteen policies are mandatory, more than 95% of schools comply.
Victoria must follow suit. Together, we can make it happen.
